Under Construction…

Our new user interface update is launching soon! (Here’s a sneak peek)

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • User Interface/Participant Platform changes will improve user experience!
  • Over the summer, updates will be made to all courses – videos, supporting material updates and much more!
  • Your progress (the courses you have taught) will NOT be maintained – with all courses being updated, we want you to have the most relevant materials starting out your 2019/2020 school year
  • Please record the courses you have taught if this information is important to you. Your course history will be cleared out mid-summer
  • You will need to reset your password when you sign in for the first time
  • Per our commitment to you, our program will continue to be completely free of charge – Music is for Everyone!

Thank you and we hope these new upgrades/updates will be a great improvement to your Music Workshop experience.

Idea for the Month

Keep Music Workshop in your plans for next year!

Music Workshop can be used in so many ways. We have purposely built the program to be flexible and easy to use. Courses can be presented all at once or split up to make a multi-day lesson. The courses can be grouped together to create a unit – such as “Sections of the Orchestra”, “Musical Genres” or “Careers in Music”. Or the courses can stand alone as an in-between unit lesson or sub plan. The Music Workshop selection of courses also lends itself very well to introducing new units of study – presenting Piano before a keyboard unit or Percussion to introduce bucket drumming for example.  We would love to hear the creative ways Music Workshop has helped supplement in your classroom. Let us know, so we can spread the word.

One last reminder… as you prepare for next years classes, please take note that your user progress/course history (i.e. what courses you have run) will be cleared out as part of the user interface upgrade. Please record and retain for your records a list of the courses you have presented is this information is valuable to you. All the courses will be available for download, as before, but the history will be cleared. Thank you!

Our Next Course is…

We have a completed script and are putting visuals together for our next course, part of our new series – the Culture Series. The Culture Series will focus on the history and attributes of the music of some amazing cultures around the world. Kicking off this series is an exploration of Native American Traditional Music. Thanks to funding from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund, we will be working hard over the summer and hope to have this course ready to launch for the new school year.

How You Can Help

Did Music Workshop help you last year? Are you planning to use it again next year? – Please consider writing a Letter of Recommendation. Recommendations from teachers are very important for our grant requests as well as our fundraising efforts. Since our program is available to you free of charge, donations make this program possible. If you can help us with a Teacher Letter of Recommendation, we would appreciate it on your school letterhead. Thank you!

Do you love music teacher Facebook groups? We do – especially I’m a General Music TeacherMusic Teachers and Elementary Music Teachers. Check them out – wonderful resources. And Like or Follow us on facebookInstagram or Twitter.

Music Workshop Superstar

Welcome to one of our most recent Music Workshop schools (and the first school in Slovenia) – Dawn from the British International School of Ljubljana. She ran the course for her students and reported:

“All of them liked the action part and also the listening and thinking about what colors and feelings they experienced. My first graders were mostly very engaged and understood a lot.”

Great to hear that your students enjoyed the program and WELCOME to you!

Music Workshop Fun Fact

We keep it simple around here. Music Workshop is two people – two Amy’s! Amy Richter is our intrepid founder and Executive Director. Amy Hall is the Program Facilitator. It’s easy to reach out – ask for an Amy and you will get help or support. Here we are dressed as our musical inspirations… Janis Joplin and Adele.

Thank you Music Workshop Teachers! You are the light of our program and we hope you have a wonderful summer! We are looking forward to next year and to all the musical journeys ahead.

We are proud to announce our next course will be part of a new series – the Culture Series. The Culture Series will focus on the history and attributes of the music of some amazing cultures around the world. This awesome series is going to kick off with an exploration of Native American Traditional Music. How You Can Help

We have a call to action – we need Student Feedback and Teacher Letters of Recommendation. This information is very important for our grant requests as well as our fundraising efforts. Donations make this program possible and we use these forms to thank our generous donors at our annual Inspire Bash. As a thank you to you, we would like to offer a $20 Amazon Gift Card for your assistance with this request (for any teacher who sends more than 30 student feedback forms). To help us with these action items, please find attached a form for the students to fill out. They are quick and easy to do and can be sent back as a scan. If you can help us with a Teacher Letter of Recommendation, we would appreciate it on your school letterhead.

Shauna McFaul is a Music Teacher at one of our international schools – in Singapore! She recently sent us this great feedback about her students and the program…

“The kids were really excited to see the connections between music they know and love and where it came from! I have a lot of students who are BRAND NEW to learning English, so I sometimes used the K-2 info with them even though they are in grade 5 just to make it more accessible and they LOVED the video. I am so happy to see awesome materials that I can use to supplement my own teaching AND would feel comfortable leaving for a sub. Thank you SO much!

We love to hear that the program can be tailored to be used in many different situations and with different types of learners. Using the course version for the younger students to help with new english speakers is so smart! Cheers and thanks, Shauna!

Music Workshop Fun Fact

We are excited about the new user interface on our website. And we love our website developer, Kevin Rankin, with Silver Lining Portland. Not only is he a great guy, excellent web developer and wonderful to work with but also he’s a rock star! Literally! In addition to his web work, he is also the drummer for classic 80’s band, Flock of Seagulls. Thank you, Kevin!

Thank you Music Workshop Teachers! You are the light of our program and we hope you have a wonderful summer! We are looking forward to next year and to all the musical journeys ahead.

We love teachers!
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Idea for the Month

Did you know? Many of the supplemental materials included in the Music Workshop program are optional. The Fill-in sheet is a good example. As teachers, you well know that students learn in different ways. Some students are visual, some audio and others experiential – and so on.  The Fill-in Sheet is meant for those learners who like to follow along on paper. For some this is helpful, for others distracting. We have made Music Workshop as flexible as possible to let you, the teachers, modify and edit the materials to fit your needs. We are here for you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We love hearing from you!

Our Next Course is…

Our next course is an update of our “Introduction to Pop” course. We are committed to keeping each Music Workshop course current with inspirational content for the students. We hear over and over that one of the best parts of Music Workshop is the way that the kids connect to the courses through current cultural references. As you can imagine, our Pop course – to stay current – needs frequent attention. Pop music is always changing and has a pretty short shelf life. It’s always fun and exciting to revisit and update a course. Look for the new and revised Introduction to Pop course soon!

How You Can Help

We LOVE to hear about all your great ideas! There are amazing supplemental lessons, ideas and units that our Music Workshop teachers create to use in tandem in our program. To help share all these great ideas with each other, we created a Facebook group to share and learn.  Click here to access the Music Workshop Teachers Group... it’s shiny and new! Please help us break it in and make it used and useful.

We also have a call to action asking for Student Feedback and Teacher Letters of Recommendation. Music Superstar

We had an amazing trip to Nashville – one of the best parts was meeting Kim Folsum and presenting Music Workshop in her classroom. She generously allowed us to teach her class. Her students were wonderful and we got the opportunity to include Tiffany Kerns and Falon Keith from the CMA Foundation in the fun! We love sharing Music Workshop and we are so grateful to the CMA Foundation for spending time with us.

Music Workshop Fun Fact

Last month a fundraiser was held on our behalf in Nashville thanks to our friend Penny Williams! We had a great show at the Tin Roof  featuring a fantastic line-up of Early Jones, Big Monti and Terri Lynn Davis + Thomas Hinds. The artists were amazing and the event was fun and successful. Thank you to everyone involved! We gave everyone who donated a Music Workshop kazoo and did they ever have a great time with them!

We are humbled, grateful and so excited to announce that we received a grant from the Spirit Mountain Community Foundation that will support our next course –  Native American Traditional Music! We will be partnering with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and other Native American music experts on this exciting new course. This course will be launched in September 2019.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”
Thank you for all that you do!
