This exciting course proves that classical music is anything but boring! The lesson includes an overview of the history of the genre from early church music to the famous movie scores of today. Students explore the many ways classical music is a part of our everyday lives, including some surprising examples of classical music in popular commercials, TV shows and films.  The course highlights some of the main styles/forms of classical music. There are demonstrations to see and hear some of the main instrument families in classical music.  And finally, the course showcases some of the early classical composers and some of the most modern and contemporary classical music composers.

The Jazz course gives students a wonderful overview on the history of jazz music and why jazz is truly an American music genre. We’ll explain improvisation and why it’s so important in jazz. The course focuses on some of the main styles and instruments of jazz. Included is a Musical Movement Minute featuring a “Call and Response” movement vocal exercise. And finally, students will be introduced to a few jazz pioneers and some of today’s great jazz artists – artists like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Diana Krall and Branford Marsalis.

You’ll see and hear the emerging new styles of rock as well as some of innovations in technology, media and instrumentation. Cassette Tapes, CD’s, Synthesizers, MTV are examined as students take a look at exciting developments in the instruments used in rock and roll. You’ll be introduced to a few rock and roll artists from the 1950’s and the 1960’s.

A fun ride through the popular world of Pop Music! This course begins with an exploration of the elements of Pop music and what makes Pop a unique musical genre. From its roots in the 1950’s you’ll learn about what musical and cultural influences made Pop music such a widespread phenomenon. The Pop song “formula” is explained, as well as a fun look at what makes a “hook”. The course then shows students some great Pop artists of the last sixty years from Elvis to Beyoncé and Chubby Checker to Taylor Swift.
